Verkade picture albums. All four written by A.F.J. Portiele. He was a researcher, specialist for sea life and mammals in the Amsterdam Zoo for 46 years.
1925 Mijn aquarium ( about fish you can observe in your own aquarium sweet water)
1930 Zeeaquarium ( seawater aquarium animals and plants)
1939 Dierenleven in Artis (about zoo animals)
1940 Apen en hoefdieren (Apes and ungulates ) This was his last album and the last one made by Verkade. Very rare.
Verkade picture albums can be regarded as the most successful Dutch advertising campaign of the 20th century. In 1903, Verkade, the bread, cake, and rusk manufacturer from Zaandam, started to publish pictures that could be pasted into specially-made albums. Soon, a large part of the Netherlands was captivated by the pictures; collecting and exchanging these pictures became a national hobby.
The albums stimulated the sale of Verkade biscuits and rusk bread. Yet, the Verkade albums were not just a publicity stunt. Jac. P. Thijsse was responsible for 20 of the 35 albums. With his inspiring texts he was playfully spreading knowledge of and love for nature and the Dutch landscape. Portiele played his part to. He was an great promoter of the Zoo's in The Netherlands.
Complete! Very rare to find them complete wit all pictures in it. Books and pictures in rather good shape but used.
