Balineese carving antique teak portrait bust.
Beautiful bust of a man with Balinese headdress, a real model was often portrayed for these types of busts. It is made by a master carver form Bali in the 1930's. The carver and the model are not known to us.
The carver has been inspired by the art-deco style of that time that was introduced in Indonesia and especially in Bali in that period, by Dutch artists such as Rudolf Bonnet and Walter Spies, who both lived in Bali for a number of years and promoted Balinese carvings in Europe.
This bust is from a Dutch collection and is in very good shape. Made of native hardwood (teak) The dark colour is a varnish used at that time.
Size: 35,5 cm Weight: 2.3 kilo.
